Remember, practice does not make perfect, however...
PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT!
Here are 10 ways to be motivated to practice:
Playing a musical instrument is about enjoying the expressiveness found in the music and the expression you add to it.
1. Musicians should play music that they want to play. Listen to your favorite song and try to play along. I can help you write out the song if you would like!
2. Make a trip to the local music store and look through books for ideas or to purchase. Make sure you can read and play the notes. (If transportation is a problem, or if they don't have the type of repertoire you are looking for, try a website such as www.sheetmusicplus.com or www.amazon.com)
3. Purchase band books or song collections that have play along CD's.
4. Purchase a duet book and play with a friend.
5. Form a band and play solos, duets, etc., together-it can be a classical group, or a jazz quartet or a power rock band!
6. Listen to music you are not familiar with and see if it sparks an interest in your musical mind.
7. Attend concerts including bands, jazz bands, symphony orchestras, etc. I have a list of venues on Long Island and New York City where the best musicians around perform.
8. Set a goal for your playing. Participate in a solo festival or contest (NYSSMA). Audition for a select band in your school or in your area. Never be disappointed in you results; be happy that you have the opportunity and ability to play a musical instrument.
9. The more practicing you do, the more fun it is to play- this is because you are getting better at the instrument. When trying to play something is frustrating because of lack of practice, it is not as fun to play.
10. Play an instrument in good condition that has a good mouthpiece. You'll be surprised how much better you can sound when switching to a quality mouthpiece. (I can give you suggestions on quality mouthpieces.)
Reed players: Make sure your reed is in good condition and that it is the right strength for your playing. Try out different brands too. (I can give you suggestions on quality reeds.)
